Assessment

What is an assessment?

Identifying dyslexia involves differential diagnosis. This is a process of identifying factors that might explain the inconsistencies reflected in an individual's performance. The format is essentially the same for children and adults, and for all specific learning difficulties.

It begins with the administration of a comprehensive measure of intellectual abilities, including language skills, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, spatial ability, memory and processing ability. It also includes separate measures of different kinds of memory. Reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension are tested, as is spelling.

Immediately after the assessment the results are explained and verbal advice on the development of skills and strategies is given. This is followed up by the provision of a comprehensive written report containing recommendations, which can be used to access resources. Our reports are accepted by employers, educational institutions, Local Education Authorities. They have also been used as evidence in Courts, Employment Tribunals and Special Education needs Tribunals.
